Matala is a patient residing at an abandoned hospital deep in the woods alongside their friend Valhe.
They were institutionalized for a heart disease they have and the constant injuries they cause to themselves.

Matala's calling is troublemaking and rebelling. They enjoy breaking into places they aren't supposed to be and smuggling in potentially harmful things they've found on their scavenging trips.
They're a kleptomaniac and would regularly steal medical equipment and various other things they have no right to own. They use these stolen medical tools to pretend to be a doctor, trying to assist other patients or experiment on Valhe, who's compliant to these often strange experiments as long as stolen substances are rewarded.
Matala often acts without thinking; whenever they get an idea, they straight jump into action with little planning, dragging their friend along to whatever idea they've thought of. Friendship is extremely important to Matala, and they strongly depend on it.
Entertainment is one of their biggest passions, and they love to make people around them laugh, even at the cost of their own dignity.

Matala suffers from various violent tendencies, which has made them quite unpopular amongst other hospital patients and staff.
If Matala isn't distracted, they will proceed to harm themselves in ways involving their neck, like self-strangulation or violently clawing at their throat, or if sharp objects are present, slicing or cutting it open. Most of the time the harm is directed only at themselves, but there have been times when Matala has caused injury to others.
At night, their hands have to be tied to the bed in order to prevent bloodshed. Matala feels ashamed of how they're treated; it makes them feel like an animal, and they hate it. These bloody episodes are something Matala isn't good at controlling, and they really do wish to "be normal." ???
