Extreme Cinema is a film subgenre defined by its graphic and frequent use of shocking imagery, such as violence, sex, and other taboo acts. Because of its controversial status, the genre is upheld by underground, often amateur directors with low budgets, resulting in many of the films being artistic and experimental in nature.

With the growth of online discussion on various social media, extreme cinema has faced increased criticism, as most people are unable to look past the grotesque surface to see the true artistry and passion within the work.
Online icebergs and TikToks may have been how you first heard about a film in the extreme cinema genre, which are often labeled in these spaces as "disturbing movies."
Well, at least that's how I first found out about them. Driven by curiosity, I watched an iceberg video covering the topic, only to be captivated by the morbid horrors.
"Why would anyone watch any of these movies?" I thought, only for me to wholeheartedly enjoy the incredibly disrespected genre just a few years later.

I find the way these films explore these controversial topics very special. There's a lot to love in B-movies that were made to test practical effects or made for mere artistic exploration. It's also a very impactful way to explore humanity and the everyday horrors that come with it..
My obsession with this topic was definitely just a matter of time; I had been fascinated by horror from a young age (which was navigated safely through LPS videos), alongside a traumatic upbringing that was bound to cause developmental problems.
Considering my age now, I think the extreme cinema genre was the safest pick my traumatized mind could have latched onto. Despite my issues, I understand its effects on the real world and how such horrors depicted could be someone's reality. The cruelty inspires me to be kinder; maybe one day all violence will be fiction, but such a day will never come.
